NEVADA GOVERNOR’S OFFICE OF ENERGY STATUS OF ENERGY REPORT 2023 - LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

When surplus renewable electricity is used to pump water uphill into a hydroelectric dam, that renewable energy is effectively stored for later use. rPlus Hydro is planning to build a 1,000 megawatt pumped hydro energy storage project in White Pine County. rPlus estimates this energy storage facility could provide roughly 13 percent of Nevada’s electricity needs for eight hours at a time.

INTERVIEW WITH PUMPED STORAGE PROJECT MANAGER

Community engagement surrounding the Plus Hydro’s Pumped Storage Project continues to increase as the Project moves forward and opposition to the Project has become more outspoken about various concerns. For example, the “Step Up for Steptoe Valley” campaign has launched full-scale efforts to gain support to halt the Project. Local governments in various positions have also put their thoughts out there as to why they think the Project is something that White Pine County can do without. It has been compared to other projects in the past, like Las Vegas attempting to acquire water rights, as well as other business endeavors that many who reside in the county see as direct opposition to our way of life.

White Pine Waterpower, LLC has joined the White Pine Chamber of Commerce at the $5,000 “Silver Sponsorship” level. White Pine Waterpower, LLC and its parent company, rPlus Hydro, are developing a 1,000 megawatt pumped storage hydropower project located approximately four miles south of McGill and eight miles northeast of Ely, Nevada.

HYDRO LEADER MAGAZINE VOLUME 3 ISSUE 4 (APRIL 2022) - AS STATES AND UTILITIES MOVE RAPIDLY TOWARD THEIR CLIMATE GOALS OF GETTING 50 OR EVEN 100 PERCENT OF THEIR ENERGY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES, THE DEMAND FOR WAYS TO STORE THAT ENERGY IS GROWING. PUMPED STORAGE HYDRO IS ONE SOLUTION, CURRENTLY ACCOUNTING FOR 95 PERCENT OF ALL UTILITY-SCALE ENERGY STORAGE IN THE UNITED STATES. ACCORDING TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY, THE UNITED STATES CURRENTLY HAS 43 PLANTS AND THE POTENTIAL TO MORE THAN DOUBLE ITS CAPACITY.
